Both India and Australia had fallible batting units, but the home team found enough players who stood up and delivered when needed. India’s performance, however, was mixed with flashes of brilliance and moments of underachievement.

At the end of the series, only one Indian managed to stand tall at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) presentation ceremony—Jasprit Bumrah, the captain and the Man of the Series. Even the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, after whom the trophy is partially named, couldn’t present it, as Cricket Australia had stated that Gavaskar would only do so if India retained the BGT. An apt, yet chaotic, conclusion to a dramatic tour.

The series began with questions about India’s reliance on Bumrah, and fortunately, the captain delivered. He not only became a household name in Australia for his spectacular performances but also inspired the entire bowling unit. Despite Australia’s fallible batting, India hung on, with a chance to retain the BGT up to the final day.

However, without Bumrah’s leadership and contribution, India fell short, failing to defend a modest 162 on the final day. That’s when Pat Cummins, hours after securing the trophy for Australia, walked to the pitch to watch his daughter play. It wasn’t about the win but about the future. Cummins showed the importance of balancing leadership and family life. Meanwhile, India’s leadership seemed stuck in front of the cameras.

Rohit Sharma, though great in interviews, couldn’t find his form with the bat, which hurt India’s chances. Sadly, some of India’s strongest performances seemed to be delivered through words, not action. Virat Kohli, too, despite being the acting captain in Bumrah’s absence, failed to find consistency with the bat. His performances were often inconsistent, and anything outside off-stump proved to be his kryptonite.

While we may not know what Kohli said in the dressing room, Gautam Gambhir’s post-series press conference shared some powerful insights. He said, “Ultimately, it’s neither my team nor your team, it’s the nation’s team.” This philosophy reflects the honesty and responsibility required to lead a team forward. Gambhir stressed the importance of fairness to all players, regardless of their stature. If he truly walks the talk, tough decisions will need to be made, particularly regarding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

On the issue of honesty, Gambhir also remarked, “The first thing is that the person sitting here will accept the mistakes first. So don’t worry that mistakes will not be accepted here.” His leadership mantra is clear—acknowledge mistakes and move forward with lessons learned.

As the series concludes, India’s cricket team needs to reflect on these words and use them to move forward. Whether it’s a performance on the field or a decision off it, the team’s unity and growth depend on addressing mistakes, taking accountability, and planning for the future.
