Andrew considers leaving after dispute with Jos Buttler
It is being reported that Andrew Flintoff and Jos Buttler did not get along well during their time in the English dressing room. Former England captain and 2005 Ashes hero Andrew Flintoff is set to step down from his coaching role in the national team’s white-ball setup.
According to a report in England’s Telegraph, Flintoff failed to strike a chord with white-ball captain Jos Buttler, resulting in the former’s exit from the squad. Instead, stand-in head coach Marcus Trescothick will be given the opportunity to appoint his own backroom staff.
Involved in short-term advisory capacity
Flintoff, who has been involved in a short-term advisory capacity, will not be part of the coaching staff for England’s upcoming white-ball series against Australia, comprising three T20Is and five ODIs. He is expected to move on to more significant coaching opportunities after a successful stint as head coach of the Northern Superchargers in this season’s Hundred.
Under his guidance, the Superchargers won five out of seven matches, missing out on the playoffs, which marked an encouraging start to Flintoff’s coaching career, with his stint with the Superchargers being his first as the head coach of a team.
England white-ball captain Jos Buttler
Despite Andrew Flintoff’s efforts, reports suggest that his working relationship with England white-ball captain Jos Buttler was not as harmonious as expected, especially during the T20 World Cup in June. While Buttler is set to continue his leadership role following the sacking of former head coach Matthew Mott, it appears that Buttler and Marcus Trescothick had a strong connection.
Trescothick and Buttler have a long-standing relationship, with Trescothick playing a key role in Buttler’s development during their time together at Somerset. This close relationship has led to Buttler often turning to Trescothick for guidance on his batting.
Trescothick did not rule out full-time coaching
Speaking after England lost six wickets for 259 on the second day of the Test against Sri Lanka, where they held a 23-run lead, he did not rule out the idea of taking on the role of head coach. I’m definitely looking forward to the opportunity. I’m really excited to take on the job. We’ll work a bit more from there.
It’s not something I ever thought about before, until I got this opportunity. I’m not thinking beyond the end of the Australia series. I’m very much focused on the job I’m doing here.
England national cricket team white-ball
Andrew Flintoff has been with the England national cricket team white-ball team since last year. He also served as the team’s assistant coach in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024, which took place in the United States and the Caribbean in June. The England national cricket team did not have a great outing in the T20 World Cup 2024. The India national cricket team defeated the defending champions in the semi-finals.
The defending champions also struggled in the league stage, losing to Australia and nearly losing to Scotland. However, Andrew Flintoff will not be a part of the three-match T20I series and five-match ODI series against the Australia national cricket team.
The former England national cricket team player will start a new phase in his coaching career. Flintoff is working with the England national cricket team on a short-term basis. He does not have a full-time contract with the team. He also took on his first head coaching role in the game with the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred 2024.
They won five games and lost only two
Under his leadership, the Northern Superchargers had a good season. They won five games and lost only two, but missed out on a place in the playoff stage. It was also revealed that his relationship with white-ball captain Jos Buttler was not good during the T20 World Cup in June.
Over the past year, Andrew Flintoff has been working hard in coaching. He did scouting work for England last year, working with age-group teams before starting to work as a consultant for the white-ball national team from September.
Cricket has given me a lot – Andrew Flintoff
Andrew Flintoff, who is not considered a candidate for the role of white-ball head coach, recently spoke about his love for the game. He said he is lucky to have had the opportunity to coach teams that have played the game for a while.
Conclusion
Cricket has given me a lot. This is what I wanted to do as a child and I got the chance to live my dream. I feel really lucky to be back here and I want the players to cherish the game. When you finish the game, you look back and it goes by so quickly, but when you’re on the field, you just take time out, just look around and feel it and live in that moment.
